Hazrat Hakeem-ul-Ummat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (may Allah have mercy on him)'s writings are not merely a collection of words, but they are a spiritual elixir that brings peace to the troubled heart, guides the wandering mind to its destination, and provides an inner shield against the aggressions of the self. Although my limited vision has seen hundreds of manifestations of outward and inward knowledge, and I have read the literary flourishes of various writers, the life-giving quality, reformative subtlety, intellectual revelation, and spiritual revolution inherent in the writings of Hazrat Thanvi (may Allah have mercy on him) are extremely rare, even unprecedented.
A significant turning point in my intellectual and spiritual journey came when I read this sentence in a thought-provoking article by Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani (may his blessings continue):
"Khutbat Hakeem-ul-Ummat is considered among the comprehensive works of Hazrat Thanvi (may Allah have mercy on him) that every student of religion and person of knowledge and understanding must include in their intellectual provisions."
I have not only heard this statement but have repeatedly found it to be true in the moments of my past life.
This was a decisive moment, after which not only did my attention turn to this ocean of meaning, but I also incorporated Hazrat's writings, sermons, discourses, and letters into my daily life in such a way that they became an integral part of my intellectual nourishment and spiritual practice.
Whether it is his sermons or discourses, whether it is "Al-Ifadat al-Yawmiya" or "Ashraf al-Jawab," "Nashr al-Tayyib" or "Hikayat-e-Auliya," every line is like the mouth of a river of knowledge, and every word is like a key to the locked treasure of inner secrets. That style of writing which combines: jurisprudential precision, Sufi subtlety, intellectual weight, and spiritual warmth—at least in my limited experience, I have not found it anywhere else with such comprehensiveness.
A special characteristic of Hazrat's writings is that they not only shake the mind but also illuminate the depths of the heart in such a way that one begins to observe one's inner self. He wrote not just with the pen, but with his state; this is why the effect is evident in his writings, the conquest in his speeches, and the purification in his discourses.
In short, for those who desire spiritual revolution, doctrinal insight, moral refinement, and practical detachment, studying the books of Hazrat Hakeem-ul-Ummat is not an optional pastime, but an indispensable necessity.
May Allah Almighty further establish Hazrat's blessings in our heedless hearts. Amen, O Lord of the Worlds.
