The Fruit of Sincerity...!
It is narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
Three men went out towards the desert. Suddenly, it started to rain, so they entered a cave to take shelter and waited for the rain to stop. While they were sitting there, a heavy stone fell from the mountain and blocked the entrance of the cave. Seeing this situation, they lost hope in their lives.
One of them said:
“Each of you should remember your purest and best deed and supplicate to Allah Almighty with it as a means, perhaps He will have mercy on us and save us from this calamity.”
One person said:
“O Allah! You know that I was very obedient to my parents. I used to bring milk (or water) for them at night, and they would drink it. One night I came and saw that they were asleep. I did not consider it appropriate to wake them up, nor did I deem it right to give it to the children before them. I stood holding the vessel in my hand until morning.
O Allah! If I did this deed only for Your pleasure, then ease our difficulty.”
So the stone moved a little, and a faint ray of light entered.
The second one said:
“O Allah! You know that I loved a woman very much. After much effort, I gained power over her, but when I approached her, she said: ‘Fear Allah!’ So I immediately backed away out of fear of You and left her.
O Allah! If I did this deed purely out of fear of You, then ease our difficulty.”
The stone moved further, so much so that they could get out if they wanted to, but the path was not completely open yet.
The third one said:
“O Allah! You know that I hired some laborers. I paid all of them their full wages, except for one, who left his wages behind. I kept his wages safe and invested it in business until it grew a lot. After some time, that laborer came back and demanded his wages. I said: ‘All that you see is yours.’ He took everything.
O Allah! If I did this deed only for Your pleasure, then ease our difficulty.”
So the stone moved away completely, and all three of them came out safe and sound.
On this occasion, the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever adopted truthfulness, found salvation.”
(Agreed upon: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
