Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended. So, whoever's migration was for Allah and His Messenger, then his migration is for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever's migration was for worldly gain that he wants to achieve, or for a woman he wants to marry, then his migration will be counted towards that for which he migrated.

 For the General Public

The first thing to be corrected in religion is the intention. We offer prayers, fast, give charity, and learn knowledge, but if all this is not for Allah, then it remains only a habit. The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) taught us this principle from the beginning that the value of an action in the sight of Allah is based on its intention, not on its quantity or abundance.
The same action can become a ladder to Paradise for one person and mere fatigue for another. The only difference is that one kept Allah in mind, and the other kept people in mind. That is why the elders of the religion say that intention is the scale on which the weight of an action is measured.
If the intention is correct, even an ordinary task becomes an act of worship, and if the intention is bad, even a great act of worship remains lifeless.

For Scholars and Students of Knowledge

This Hadith is, according to the Ummah, both advice and a principle of religion, which is why the Imams Mujtahideen have described its extraordinary importance...
Imam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir Rahma) considered it a quarter of knowledge. Imam Shafi'i (Alaihir Rahma) called it half of knowledge, and according to Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (Alaihir Rahma), this Hadith is at the level of a third of knowledge because intention is the foundation of worship, transactions, and ethics.
The reason for this Hadith's revelation is narrated by Saeed bin Mansoor and Tabarani in Mu'jam Kabir that a companion sent a marriage proposal to a woman. The woman stipulated that if he wanted to marry her, he should migrate to Medina. The companion migrated, but his purpose was marriage. The woman's name was Qila, who was famous as Umm-e-Qais, and in relation to her, that companion was called Muhajir Umm-e-Qais...
Imam Ghazali (Rahimahullah) has made a very comprehensive division of actions based on intention.
1️⃣ Sin
Actions in which intention does not bring any change. A forbidden act does not become permissible even with a good intention.
2️⃣ Obedience and Intended Worship
These are the acts of worship whose validity and virtue depend on intention, such as prayer, fasting, and Zakat.
3️⃣ Permissible Actions
These are seemingly worldly tasks, but they can become acts of worship with a pure intention, such as earning a livelihood, eating, sleeping, and marriage.
Therefore, do not just perform the action, but also correct the direction of the heart before the action...
