Islam has declared good behavior with parents as a very important duty, and disobedience to them is counted among the major sins. In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has commanded to treat parents well immediately after His worship. Allah Almighty says:
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and do good to parents” (Surah Al-Isra).
Disobedience to parents also causes destruction for a person in this world. Peace is taken away from the life of disobedient children, sustenance becomes scarce, and lack of blessings becomes common. In Hadith Sharif, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The prayer of one who disobeys his parents is not accepted.”
Such people in the world remain victims of humiliation, trouble, and failure. Quarrels increase in their homes and children also become disobedient, because as you sow, so shall you reap.
The punishment for disobeying parents in the Hereafter is even more severe. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah Almighty will not look with mercy on three people on the Day of Resurrection, one of them is the one who disobeys his parents.”
Another Hadith states that disobedience to parents is an act that leads to Hell. The fragrance of Paradise may also be forbidden to such a person, unless he repents and pleases his parents.
In the Holy Quran, parents are forbidden to be said even "Uff" to, which is evidence that even a slight rudeness angers Allah. The person who makes his parents cry is actually inviting punishment for himself.
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to serve our parents, obey them, and pray for them, because Allah's pleasure is in the pleasure of parents, and His displeasure is in their displeasure. Amen.
