Predestination (Fixed Destiny) and Contingent Destiny: A Balanced Concept of Divine Justice and Human Choice
Article (66) In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The issue of destiny is one of the fundamental beliefs that, if not contemplated, can lead a person to intellectual confusion. Some people mistake Allah's eternal knowledge for compulsion, while others exaggerate human choice to the point where denying destiny becomes necessary. However, the Quran presents a balanced concept in which Allah's knowledge remains in its place, and human responsibility is also upheld. This intellectual explanation is presented to explain this balance.
The Original Question (Which Causes Confusion)
When Allah has known from eternity what the servant will do as their final act,
then what is the need for Contingent Destiny (writing, erasing, changing)?
And if everything is predetermined, how is man responsible for his actions?
This question is not merely a doubt, but a serious intellectual dilemma. And if its correct answer is not understood, a person either falls prey to pure compulsion or escapes responsibility.
Where Does the Matter Get Confused?
The real confusion arises when we begin to view Allah's knowledge and the servant's actions in the same sphere, whereas the Quran teaches us a clear distinction between the two.
To understand this difference, it is necessary to keep a fundamental principle in mind:
Allah's knowledge is the knowledge of the;result;, and Contingent Destiny is the system of;paths;.
If this difference becomes clear, the issue of destiny automatically begins to resolve itself.
The Root of the Original Question
Life, death, paradise, hell - but how will life be for whom?
Death in what way, from what cause?
This is where man mistakenly assumes that if the end is fixed, then effort is meaningless, whereas this question is the key to a balanced concept of destiny.
What is Fixed Destiny (Taqdir-e-Mubram).?
Allah's knowledge - knowing; this
is not; causing compulsion.
Allah Almighty's knowledge is eternal and everlasting. He knows the past, present, and future in a single moment. But knowing this does not compel the servant. The Quran states:
(Al-Baqarah: 282)
The truth is that: Allah's knowing does not become the cause. The servant's doing with his choice becomes the cause. What the servant will do is already present in Allah's knowledge. There is no increase or decrease in Allah's knowledge.
Therefore. Fixed Destiny is the sphere of the end that does not change. This aspect of destiny is what scholars have called Fixed Destiny. These are the final decisions that: are recorded in the Preserved Tablet (Lauh-e-Mahfuz)
are based on Allah's eternal knowledge do not change, do not erase
like:
When will someone die?
Will someone's end be on faith or disbelief?
The final destination of paradise or hell. The Quran says:
(Ar-Ra'd: 39)
Intellectual Explanation:
This end is fixed in Allah's knowledge, not in the servant's choice. But the paths to reach this end have been placed in the servant's choice. Quranic Arguments for Fixed Destiny
Indeed, We have created all things with precise measure.﴿
(Al-A'raf: 34) When their term comes, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]. This is the final decision of the end. It is Fixed Destiny,
What is Contingent Destiny (Taqdir-e-Muallaq)?
A simple and effective explanation of Contingent Destiny. This is the path to reach the end: such as how life will be spent, in what circumstances and for what reasons death will come, and what the stages of reaching paradise or hell will be - all this comes under the sphere of Contingent Destiny. These paths: change with prayer are made or ruined by actions turn back with repentance close with negligence
That is why Contingent Destiny is called a conditional system.
Comprehensive in One Line:
Allah has kept the end absolute in His knowledge; and by giving the paths into the servant's choice
He has maintained justice, examination, and responsibility - all three. Intellectual Sentence (To Remember):
Fixed Destiny tells; where to reach;
And Contingent Destiny tells; how to reach;
This difference makes destiny not compulsion, but a wise system of Divine Justice.
Therefore; Contingent Destiny is the sphere where choice speaks
Here, the meaning of Contingent Destiny becomes completely clear. There are many matters in life that we see changing in everyday life: the improvement or deterioration of circumstances, the expansion or contraction of sustenance, the arrival or departure of illness, and the removal of calamity. All this is part of this conditional system.
The Quran states ﴿
Ha Mim Sajdah: 46)
All these verses make it clear that:
Erasure and affirmation are in the system of angels
Choice, prayer, and action are real
The end is in Allah's knowledge, the path is in the servant's hand
        Intellectual Summary
This erasing and keeping is not a change in Allah's knowledge, but a change in the practical record of the angels. The real understanding of destiny arises from here:
In Allah's knowledge:
Everything is clear at once - there is no; if; here
For the servant. The future is hidden that is why prayer, fear, hope. And
Choice has been given in the system of angels: conditional commands are written they are erased and changed upon prayer
Prayer and Action - Not a Clash with Destiny
Most people think that prayer is against destiny, whereas the truth is the opposite.
The Holy Prophet ﷺ said;لَا يَرُدُّ الْقَضَاءَ إِلَّا الدُّعَاءُ ; i.e., prayer is not running away from destiny, (Jami' al-Tirmidhi; al-Jami' al-Sahih; Kitab al-Qadar; Bab Ma Jaa' La Yarudd al-Qadar Illa al-Dua'; No. 2139.)
but rather walking within destiny. Allah knows from eternity that: the servant will pray
The prayer will be accepted the calamity will be averted
All this is predetermined in Allah's knowledge, but kept conditional as a path for the servant. Then the question arises again here:
If the end is known, then why the examination?
That is: destruction also with proof. Salvation also with proof because justice is based not on the end, but on the path.
A few simple examples.
1. The main misunderstanding in the matter of destiny is also that knowing; beforehand; is taken as the cause of the action, whereas the truth is the opposite. For example, the timetable of an airplane and a train is predetermined, but the train runs by the engine and the driver's intention; the timetable does not create this movement but is made according to this movement. That is, the schedule is subject to the movement, the movement is not subject to the schedule.
2. Similarly, if we know the time of a flight in advance and write it in a diary, it does not prove that the plane took off because of our writing; rather, the plane took off according to its program, and we knew about it beforehand. Our knowledge is subject to the flight, the flight is not subject to our knowledge.
3. Similarly, if an engineer, before building a building, examines the capacity of the land and materials and says that this building will last for fifty years, then the building's lasting is not due to the engineer's knowledge but due to the real capacity of the components; the engineer's knowledge is according to those capacities.
The knowledge of the creation is limited and based on estimates, so error is possible in it; but Allah Almighty's knowledge is ancient, complete, and encompasses every particle, nothing can be against His knowledge. Allah's knowing about the creation beforehand is not compulsion but correct knowledge, and this is destiny.
Allah Almighty says:
That is, Allah fulfills His command and He has appointed a due measure for everything.
When a person can make a preliminary estimate by knowing the capacity of a system, then how can the Creator of the universe, who is the maker and operator of this entire system, be unaware of the condition and future of His creation? He is All-Knowing and All-Aware, and His knowledge encompasses the entire universe.
4. Similarly, a teacher knows that this (is very dull-witted or very lazy and extremely mischievous and unindustrious.) student will fail, but still. teaches
takes the exam
gives the opportunity
Why?
Knowledge is for the teacher,
The exam is for the student. (Taken from Masala-e-Taqdeer Aur Awami Masail, pp. 27/28)
Exactly this ratio:
Allah's knowledge = is final and. Contingent Destiny = practical system. Allah knows the end, but the servant has to walk to that end himself. Destiny is not merely the name of knowledge, but along with it, it is the system of the manifestation of Divine Justice. Like. Briefly (Divine Knowledge. Divine Will. Divine Wisdom. In giving choice. In showing paths. In giving respite. In opening the door of prayer and repentance. Appears.)
In short: The correct way to understand destiny is not to call it compulsion or aimlessness, but to see it as the mutual connection of Allah's knowledge, wisdom, and justice. When the end is in Allah's knowledge and the paths are in man's choice, then life becomes a meaningful examination.
The Quran declares:
(Aal-e-Imran: 133)
    :Intellectual Indication:
Forgiveness and paradise are not merely predetermined ends, but choice, prayer are paths, and this is the spirit of a balanced concept of destiny.
