The Prophethood of Humanity and Gradual Revelation — An Intellectual Study of Divine Wisdom
Article (63). In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
In the chapter of Prophethood, there are two fundamental questions that have shaken human thought in every era:
Firstly, if the prophets were human, why were objections raised against them?
And secondly, why was the entire Quran not revealed at once?
These two questions appear to be separate, but in reality, they are two links in the same chain of thought. The Holy Quran not only provides a reasoned answer to these questions but also unveils the wisdom of human psychology, choice, training, and the test of faith upon which the entire system of prophethood is based.
Question 1: If the prophets were human, why were objections raised against them?
(1) The Root of the Objection: Ego and the Presumption of Superiority
The Quran clarifies that the problem of the deniers was not that the prophets were human, but the real issue was why they should obey someone like themselves?
﴿أَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ بَشَرًا رَّسُولًا﴾ Translation: "Did Allah send a human as a messenger?"
(Al-Isra: 94)
This sentence is not merely a question but an expression of ridicule and denial of authority. It was as if they were saying:
"If we have to accept someone, we should accept someone who is superior to us, why someone like us?" Thus, the real obstacle was not being human but the breaking of the ego.
(2) If the prophet were an angel, the objection would still remain. The Quran rejects this psychological attitude in advance:
﴿وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ مَلَكًا لَّجَعَلْنَاهُ رَجُلًا﴾ Translation
"And if We had sent an angel as a messenger, We would have made him a man."
(Al-An'am: 9) The reason for this is quite clear:
An angel cannot practically understand human weakness, trials, and social life. A human would say: "He is not like us, how can we follow him?"
Thus, the objection does not end, only the form of the objection changes.
Giving news of the enmity and obstinacy of the polytheists, Allah Almighty says that even if We had sent down to you a book written on paper that they could touch with their hands; they could see it descending from the sky; even then these disbelievers would say that this is plain magic; i.e.; just as they are doubting the human prophet, the same doubt would grip them about the human angel because he would also ultimately have the form of a human being; (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, p. 210.) In any case; history bears witness that: the truthfulness of the Prophet ﷺ was acknowledged by the enemies of Islam. The character of the Prophet ﷺ was spotless.
Not a single word ever came against his trustworthiness and honesty. Therefore, when no argument remained, the final objection was: "These people eat and drink like us, and walk in the markets." This objection was actually an excuse to avoid the call to truth, not a valid argument. It should be clear that the verses that were revealed to the Prophet ﷺ are light. The prophethood of the Prophet ﷺ is light. The Quran revealed to him is light. Faith is light. And all these qualities are present in the Prophet ﷺ to the fullest extent, so in terms of these qualities, the Prophet ﷺ is light, but in terms of his essence, the Prophet ﷺ is human because he was created among humans. He ate, drank, married, and lived like a human being. After God, you are the greatest, to put it briefly. (Thamrat al-Aqa'id, p. 82); قُلْ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي هَلْ كُنتُ إِلَّا بَشَرًا رَّسُولًا﴾ Say; Glory be to my Lord; I am but a human being; sent as a messenger.
(Surah Al-Isra, verse 93) This verse describes the unreasonable demands of the deniers and the human status of the Holy Prophet ﷺ in a very clear manner. ﴿وَأَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ نُورًا مُّبِينًا﴾ (An-Nisa: 174) "And We have sent down to you a clear light." These verses definitively prove that the Quran is not just a book but a light of guidance that illuminates both the mind and the heart.
Question 2: Why was the entire Quran not revealed at once?
This question relates to the style of revelation, and behind it lies Allah Almighty's profound wisdom, human psychology, and educational requirements.
(1) Human nature cannot bear the divine burden all at once. The Quran itself describes the limit of human capacity:
﴿لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَـٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ لَّرَأَيْتَهُ خَاشِعًا مُّتَصَدِّعًا﴾ Translation: If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and split asunder out of fear of Allah; (Al-Hashr: 21)
When a hard creation like a mountain cannot bear this burden,
then how could a human, who is a collection of emotions, desires, and weaknesses, relatively very soft, bear it? That is why the Quran was revealed gradually (little by little) according to circumstances, events, and needs, not all at once.
(2) Therefore, the Quran was not a book, but a revolution.
If the entire Quran had been revealed at once, then:
The commandments would have been implemented suddenly. Habits would have had to be broken immediately. Society would have fallen apart mentally and practically. The prohibition of alcohol, the prohibition of interest, and social and moral reforms all came in stages so that: humans would change with awareness, not under pressure.
(3) Gradual Revelation: A Unique Method of Training, Not Just Education.
The Quran itself describes this wisdom:
﴿وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الْقُرْآنُ جُمْلَةً وَاحِدَةً ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ لِنُثَبِّتَ بِهِ فُؤَادَكَ ۖ وَرَتَّلْنَاهُ تَرْتِيلًا﴾
(Surah Al-Furqan, verse 32). - The training of the Holy Prophet ﷺ was also gradual under the wisdom of Allah. The gradual revelation of the Quran was not only for the collective training of the Ummah, but also a constant source of comfort for the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
guidance and strengthening of the heart. At every stage, revelation provided guidance, gave peace to the heart, provided answers to the objections of the opponents, and clarified the course of action according to the circumstances. Thus, revelation continued to go along with life; it was not revealed all at once in the form of a complete book, but became that comprehensive voice rising from the barren, desolate, and ignorant land of Mecca, which is a message of revolution for all humanity until the Day of Judgment.
Graduation was chosen so that training could be possible, the heart and mind could go through the stages of acceptance, and it could be nurtured and preserved without burdening human nature. This revelation: was not just for memorizing
but for understanding, adopting, and implementing. This gradation:
changed individuals. Improved families. And made a scattered society into a nation. That is why this style of prophethood satisfies the mind, is in harmony with nature, and makes the test of faith meaningful. In short: the prophet was human so that a model could be established, and the Quran was revealed gradually so that humans could be reformed.
Therefore, the impact of the Quran is a beautiful expression of Allah's perfect wisdom, and its eternity is a complete and clear proof of its revolutionary character.
