You did not even consider his disgrace
How fearless you have become, O tearful eye

Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar's Birthday
December 10, 1878

A great leader of the Indian Muslims. Used the pen name 'Jauhar'. Born in the state of Rampur. He was two years old when his father passed away. His mother was a reflection of religious qualities, so from childhood, he had a deep interest in Islamic teachings. He received his early education in Rampur and Bareilly. For higher education, he went to Aligarh. He passed the BA exam with such outstanding success that he stood first in Allahabad University. He completed his ICS at Oxford University. Upon his return, he worked in the states of Rampur and Baroda, but soon became disillusioned with the job. He went to Calcutta and started the English newspaper 'Comrade'.

In addition to his command of the English language, Maulana was also a master of Urdu. He also started an Urdu daily newspaper 'Hamdard', which was a successful example of expressing opinions with boldness and fearlessness. Maulana spent a significant part of his life in imprisonment for actively participating in the freedom movement. He remained in jail for several years for the non-cooperation movement. He was the founder of the Khilafat Movement of 1919. He participated equally with Gandhi Ji in the Non-Cooperation Movement. Jamia Millia Delhi was established through his efforts. In January 1931, he went to England to attend the Round Table Conference. Here, while demanding the freedom of the country, he said that if the British do not free my country, I will not go back and you will have to build my grave here. Shortly after that, he passed away in London. His body was taken to Jerusalem for burial. Maulana also had a deep interest in Urdu poetry and literature. He wrote countless ghazals and poems.

....

I may be helpless, but Allah is not helpless
I may be far from you, but He is not far
Your health is acceptable to us, but if it is
Not acceptable to Him, then it is not acceptable to us either
Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar

During imprisonment, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar's daughter, Amna, became so ill that hopes of her survival began to fade. Maulana was constantly receiving news. He could have appealed for parole, and it was possible that the government would have accepted the appeal, but his pride did not allow it. He held on to patience and secured an eternal place in the history of determination and perseverance. This poem is from that period:

This embodiment of submission and contentment received the heartbreaking news of Amna's death during imprisonment. God knows what must have happened to his heart.

....

Every chest is waiting for your arrow
Choose carefully, O loving gaze
---

I don't know how to pray, nor do I know how to perform ablution
I prostrate when you come in front of me
---

Tawhid is that God will say on the Day of Judgment
This servant is angry with the world for my sake
---

The murder of Hussain is actually the death of Yazid
Islam is revived after every Karbala
---

The whole world thinks he is crazy
Now my coming to my senses is your disgrace
---

By the dignity of the blood of the martyrs of Karbala
Yazid has won a trench, but lost the war
---

The complaint of the hunter is unnecessary in the cage, O nightingale
Here, your own style of lamentation has brought you
---

How will you stay with me until morning, O age
This is how the hours of the night of separation pass
---

A time of life will come, O killer, after death
Our beginning is after your end
---

It is a waste to live if one is afraid of death
If there is such a desire for life, then this is death
---

If it is not a fearless translator of the heart
It is better than this that there should be no tongue at all
---

You did not even consider his disgrace
How fearless you have become, O tearful eye
---

Jauhar, is there any end to imprisonments?
Create a free, disordered system
---

On whose strength is this obstinacy, O Hazrat Jauhar?
Whose support will you seek after God?
