And a Moment of Spiritual Renewal

When Ramadan al-Mubarak, with all its spiritual blessings, mercies, and forgivenesses, approaches its final phase, a strange feeling arises in the hearts of the believers. On one hand, there is sadness at the departure of this blessed month, and on the other hand, the question arises with intensity: have we passed through this blessed month successfully, or have we become victims of deprivation? Ramadan is not merely the name of fasting for a few days or performing outward acts of worship, but it is a great training campaign that changes a person's entire life. In this month, a person is given the best opportunity to strengthen his relationship with his Lord, purify his soul, and refine his character. This is why, when the last ten days of Ramadan begin, people with sensitive hearts begin to review their performance.

The last ten days of Ramadan al-Mubarak are actually the spirit of this sacred month and the culmination of its blessings. The entire Ramadan is a time of worship, purification, and training in piety, but the last ten days represent the completion of this spiritual journey and its highest stage. In these blessed days is hidden that great night which is called Laylat al-Qadr, and about which the Holy Quran has declared: "Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months." The greatness of this night and its spiritual significance can be estimated from this announcement. This is the blessed hour in which Allah's mercies are especially directed, angels descend to earth, and the doors of forgiveness and goodness are opened for the servants. This night is also extraordinary in that important decisions of a person's life are made in it. The servant prays humbly before his Lord, repents, and asks for guidance and goodness for his life. Therefore, whoever finds this night with sincerity, this moment can become a means of changing the course of his entire life.

In view of this very fact, the Holy Prophet ﷺ used to pay special attention to worship in the last ten days of Ramadan. It is mentioned in the hadiths that he ﷺ used to stay awake more at night during this time, engage in worship, and also awaken his family members so that they would not be deprived of this great opportunity. It was as if his entire focus was on spending every night of this decade in as much worship and prayer as possible. This behavior is actually a clear message for the Ummah. It tells us that the end of Ramadan should not be a time of laziness and negligence, but this is the stage when a person should further increase his worship and spiritual efforts. Thus, the last ten days of Ramadan become an opportunity in which a person can get closer to his Lord and give his life a new spiritual height.

In this final stage of Ramadan, the most important question for a person is what he has gained from this blessed month. True success is not only in the number of fasts or the outward abundance of worship, but in the change that occurs in a person's heart and character through Ramadan. If at the end of this month, a person feels that his life has become better than before and his desire for goodness has increased, then this is his real success. In fact, successful is the person whose heart has developed a deep connection with the Quran, who has begun to understand it not only as a book of recitation but as guidance and life's guidance. Similarly, one sign of success is that humility and humbleness are created in his prayer, and he understands worship as a means of closeness to his Lord instead of a burden.

Similarly, the true blessing of Ramadan is manifested when purity comes into a person's tongue and character. Successful is the one whose tongue is protected from lying, backbiting, and bad language, and whose behavior becomes gentle and polite. Furthermore, feelings of sympathy, compassion, and goodwill for people should increase in his heart, because the spirit of Islam is not limited to worship alone but is also reflected in good treatment of people. When these changes occur in a person's life, he actually achieves the purpose of Ramadan. For him, this month does not remain merely a season of worship but becomes a training ground that leads him to a new life with new thinking, new determination, and better character.

On the contrary, the greatest deprivation is that the blessed month of Ramadan passes, but no real change occurs in a person's life. If malice and hatred remain in the heart despite fasting, harshness and insensitivity remain in morals despite performing prayers, and light and gentleness do not arise in a person's character despite listening to or reading the Quran, then this is a sign that we have not reached the true spirit of Ramadan. In fact, the purpose of Ramadan is not merely to endure hunger and thirst but to reform the inner self of man and build his character. Fasting trains a person in patience, piety, and self-accountability, so that purity and moderation are created in his life. But if this spiritual training does not appear in a person's behavior and lifestyle, it means that the blessings of Ramadan have not been taken advantage of in the true sense.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew attention to this very fact in a famous hadith. He ﷺ said: "How many fasting people are there who get nothing from their fasting except hunger and thirst." This hadith is actually a message of warning and awakening. It shakes us and puts this question before us: are we also among those people who perform the outward acts of Ramadan but remain deprived of its spiritual blessings? Therefore, it is necessary that we consider the remaining moments of Ramadan as precious, take stock of our hearts and minds, and try to make the spirit of this month a means of real change in our lives.

The last days of Ramadan actually provide the best opportunity for self-accountability. This is the time when a person can stop for a few moments from his daily activities and review his heart and his actions. The entire month is spent in worship, prayer, and training in piety, so it is necessary to see at its end how much this spiritual training has affected our lives. On such an occasion, a person must ask himself a few important questions:
Has my relationship with my Lord become stronger than before?
Has sincerity and humbleness been created in my prayer?
Has gentleness in my morals and compassion for others increased?
And have I tried to make the Quran the guide of my life instead of just a book of recitation?
If the answers to these questions are positive, then this is a sign that the blessings of Ramadan have really affected our lives and we have come close to the purpose of this month. But if a person feels that the desired change has not yet occurred in him, then there is no need for him to be disappointed.

In fact, the last moments of Ramadan are also very important. Allah's mercy is vast and His doors are always open. If a person repents sincerely, confesses his shortcomings, and resolves to live a better life, then these last moments of Ramadan can also change his destiny and give his life a new direction. These very moments make a person believe that change is always possible, and true success is hidden not only in the number of fasts and worship but in the purity of heart, gentleness of morals, and sincerity in action. Therefore, every individual should not waste the last moments of Ramadan but should bow down in the court of his Lord and make full efforts for his reformation and renewal of life, so that this holy month becomes not just a temporary day for him but a source of guidance and spiritual elevation in life.

The end of Ramadan is actually the most blessed hour of prayer and repentance. This is the moment when a person bows down with humility and humbleness before his Lord with all his weaknesses, shortcomings, and negligence, and asks for forgiveness for his mistakes. On this occasion, the servant says from the heart: "O Allah! If we have made mistakes, then forgive us, accept our worship, and include us among those who emerge successful from this month."

This prayer is not merely words of the tongue but a call from the heart, in which the servant desires reformation, goodness, and spiritual improvement in his life. This prayer made with a sincere heart gives peace to a person's heart, gives him new courage, and can start a real change in his life. The repentance and prayer made in the last moments of Ramadan is actually an opportunity for every individual of the Muslim Ummah to change his destiny, achieve spiritual elevation, and resolve to mold his life according to the pleasure of Allah. Thus, this moment gives not only a message of personal reform but also of collective awakening and change, and it proves that the real blessing of Ramadan lies in the purification of hearts, sincerity, and turning to Allah.

The real success of Ramadan is manifested when its effects are not limited to the month alone but are also evident in a person's life after Ramadan. If the observance of prayer, love for the Quran, the spirit of charity, and the state of piety continue throughout the year, then this is a clear sign that Ramadan has really affected a person's heart and character and he has brought the spirit of this holy month into his life.

But if everything becomes the same after Eid as it was before, that is, there is no love for the Quran in the heart, there is no humbleness in worship, there is no improvement in morals and relationships, then this is an indication that we have not made the training of Ramadan and its message a part of our lives in the true sense. In this case, a person needs to renew his faith and character so that the blessings of Ramadan are not limited to temporary happiness or ritual but become a permanent source of spiritual light and guidance. That is, life after Ramadan is actually a time of testing, which shows whether we have only spent the teachings of Ramadan or have really adopted them. This moment reminds us that the journey of worship and purification is not limited to just one month, but should be the purpose of a complete life.

The final phase of Ramadan is actually the final stage of an exam. Now it has to be decided whether we have succeeded or been deprived. Successful is the one who emerges from this month with closeness to Allah, purity of heart, and light of character. Deprived is the one who does not bring any change in his life despite this great opportunity. Therefore, when Ramadan is about to depart, every believer should make this prayer in his heart: "O Allah! Grant us the true blessings of Ramadan, make us worthy of Your pleasure, and include us among those fortunate servants for whom Ramadan comes as a message of success and salvation." Because the truth is that the final phase of Ramadan actually declares that the real success of life is in the pleasure of Allah and the greatest deprivation is in His displeasure.
