Islam gives extraordinary importance to the reformation of a person's inner world along with their external life. The teachings of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly draw attention to the fact that a person's real success lies not only in their outward actions but also in the state of their heart. The heart is the center where the light of faith is born and where the darkness of negligence can also take root. That is why in Islamic teachings, the reformation of the heart, its purity, and its awakening have been declared the foundation of spiritual life.
Ramadan is the month of this spiritual training. This month does not limit a person to merely fasting and performing outward acts of worship, but invites them to look within themselves, recognize their weaknesses, and renew their relationship with their Lord. Every day and every night of Ramadan reminds a person that the real purpose of life is to attain the pleasure of Allah Almighty and to form a pure character. But when this blessed month enters its final stage, that is, the last ten days, its spiritual atmosphere becomes even deeper and more meaningful.
The last ten days of Ramadan are actually a special invitation from Allah Almighty to the believing servant to take stock of their life and try to improve the world of their heart. In these blessed nights comes that great night which is called Shab-e-Qadr and which the Quran has declared better than a thousand months. This night actually provides a person with the opportunity to stand humbly before their Lord, ask for forgiveness for their sins, purify their soul, and move forward on the journey of their life with a new determination.
Today's human being is living in an era where material progress has reached its peak, but despite this, restlessness, anxiety, and spiritual emptiness are increasing in hearts. Fast-paced life, the onslaught of information, and constant busyness have apparently given man a lot, but have reduced the peace and tranquility of his heart. In such an environment, Ramadan, and especially its last ten days, serves as a spiritual refuge for man, where he can get away from the noise of the world and get closer to his Lord.
In this context, the message of the last ten days of Ramadan reminds us that just as we keep various devices and screens clean in our daily lives so that the picture is clear, we also need to keep the screen of our heart clean. Because when the heart is clean, the light of faith shines in it completely and shows a person the right path in life. Keeping this fact in mind, the following article "Purification of the Heart and the Last Ten Days of Ramadan" is an attempt to highlight the spiritual wisdom of the last ten days of Ramadan, its moral effects, and the aspects of man's inner reformation, so that we can truly benefit from this blessed time and illuminate our lives with the light of faith, peace, and meaning.
The last ten days of Ramadan are in fact a time of spiritual awakening and inner renewal. These are the blessed days in which a person reviews the world of their inner self, looks at their shortcomings, and tries to acquaint their heart and mind with a new light. If we put it in the language of the modern era, these days are the best opportunity for a person to clean the "screen of their heart". Just as dust or unnecessary files accumulate on the screen of a mobile or computer, the picture becomes blurred, similarly, layers of sins, negligence, and worldly affairs accumulate on the heart of a person, which dims the light of truth.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has described the pollution of the heart and its cleansing in a very eloquent manner. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "When a servant commits a sin, a black dot is placed on his heart, then if he repents and asks for forgiveness, the heart becomes clean, and if he increases in sins, that blackness increases." This is the state that the Quran has described as "RANA ALA QULUBIHIM" (Al-Mutaffifin: 14). This reference will further strengthen your metaphor of "dust on the screen of the heart". In Islamic teachings, the heart has been declared the center of human personality. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that there is a piece of flesh in the human body, if it is right, the whole body becomes right, and if it is spoiled, the whole body becomes spoiled, and that is the heart. From this fact, it is estimated that the real source of man's intellectual, moral, and spiritual life is the heart. Therefore, when the screen of the heart is clean, the actions, thoughts, and attitudes of a person also become bright and balanced.
The Holy Quran has declared the purity of the heart as the basic criterion of human welfare. Allah Almighty says: "YAWMA LA YANFA'U MALUN WALA BANUN • ILLA MAN ATALLAHA BI QALBIN SALEEM" (Ash-Shu'ara: 88-89). That is, on the Day of Judgment, neither wealth nor children will be of any use, except for those who come to Allah with a pure heart. Similarly, it is said in another place: "ALA BI DHIKRI LLAHI TATMA'INNAL QULUB" (Ar-Ra'd: 28). This verse clarifies the fact that the real peace of mind and its purification is in the remembrance of Allah. The last ten days of Ramadan are a practical course of this purification of the heart. In these days, Itikaf, Qiyam al-Layl, recitation of the Quran, remembrance and supplication, and abundance of forgiveness give a person the opportunity to look within himself. The silence of the mosque, the silence of dawn, and the hours of Tahajjud make the heart of man capable of turning away from the noise of the world and towards his Lord. This is the state in which a person takes stock of his past and makes a new commitment for his future.
It is known from the hadiths that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) gave extraordinary importance to the last ten days of Ramadan. Hazrat Aisha (RA) narrates: "When the last ten days of Ramadan came, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would tighten his belt, stay awake at night in worship, and also wake up his family." (Sahih Bukhari). This narration indicates that the last ten days are not only a time of individual worship but also a time of spiritual awakening for the entire home and society. Itikaf is actually the name of taking a person out of the crowd of the world and keeping them in the house of Allah for a few days. Its purpose is not only to stay in the mosque but also to train the soul and reform the self. According to scholars, Itikaf bestows three great blessings on a person:
• Focus and solitude.
• Continuous worship environment.
• Self-accountability.
All three of these things play a fundamental role in cleansing the heart.
The greatest virtue of this decade is Shab-e-Qadr, which the Quran has declared better than a thousand months. This night is actually a night that can change the course of human life. The worship performed in it not only becomes a means of forgiveness of sins but also creates a freshness of faith in the heart of man that bestows him with steadfastness on the paths of goodness and virtue in the future life. It is as if this night is a spiritual "reset" after which a person can start the journey of life with new energy and new insight. Today's human being is living in an era where there is an abundance of information but a lack of peace in hearts. Social media, fast-paced life, and constant busyness have apparently connected man to the world but have distanced him from his inner self. The last ten days of Ramadan provide an opportunity to reduce this distance. It reminds us that the real light of the heart is in the remembrance of Allah, and true peace is attained only when a person strengthens his relationship with his Lord.
Interestingly, modern psychology also confirms the fact that man needs silence, meditation, and spiritual attention for mental peace. According to psychologists, continuous digital engagement tires the human mind, while silent worship, contemplation, and prayer rebalance the human mind. The last ten days of Ramadan are actually a divine system for restoring this spiritual and mental balance. Cleaning the screen of the heart does not only mean repenting of sins but also creating positive values within oneself. Replacing envy with goodwill, hatred with love, arrogance with humility, and insensitivity with compassion is part of this purification. When the heart is adorned with these qualities, a person becomes a blessing not only for himself but also for society.
The last ten days of Ramadan give us the message that the real success of life is not only in outward progress but in inward purity. If a person cleans the screen of his heart, he sees a clear view of the truth that guides him to the right path. This is the state in which a person is close to his Lord and fills his life with purpose and meaning. Therefore, there is a need that we should not spend these last moments of Ramadan merely as a formal worship but make them an opportunity for the spiritual renewal of our lives. We should clean the dust of negligence, malice, and sins from the screen of our heart, illuminate it with the light of the Quran, and make it transparent with the tears of prayer. If we succeed in doing so, then the end of Ramadan will actually become the beginning of a new and bright life. A few ways to clean the screen of the heart in the last ten days:
• Regular recitation of the Quran daily
• Abundance of forgiveness
• Tahajjud and prayer
• Forgiving people
• Distance from social media and unnecessary engagements
• Charity and alms
