The true greatness of a human being lies not in their attire, lineage, or outward appearance, but in the heart that beats for others, in the language that spreads gentleness and love, and in the character that becomes a beacon of light even in the darkness.
To be declared the noblest of creation is not merely an honor for humankind, but also a great responsibility. Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, has bestowed upon humans the blessings of intellect, consciousness, will, and choice, and has granted them the freedom to choose between good and evil. This very choice is the foundation of human testing and the secret to their excellence. When a person uses their choice for goodness, love, justice, and service to humanity, their greatness of humanity shines forth, and they truly fulfill their position.
The Holy Quran describes this honor of humanity in this way:
وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ
Translation: "And We have certainly honored the children of Adam."
This verse reminds humans that the honor bestowed upon them is linked to the purity of their character and the loftiness of their morals. If there is gentleness in character, compassion in the heart, and honesty in action, then a person becomes a practical example of this Quranic honor.
The truth is that the greatness of humanity is not in outward beauty, nor in the abundance of wealth, but it is hidden in the sincerity of intention, goodness of conduct, and dignity of character. A gentle tone and refined speech bring people closer to hearts, while arrogance and harshness push people into valleys of loneliness. The person who understands the suffering of others as their own suffering is the one who is familiar with the secret of the greatness of humanity.
The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) described this very truth in a very comprehensive manner:
لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ
Translation:
"None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."
This hadith is the foundation of good morals and the soul of humanity. The completion of faith occurs when a person's heart rises above selfishness and desires good for others as well. This passion leads a person on the path of sacrifice, love, and compassion.
The feeling of the heart is the foundation of morality. The person who has good morals necessarily has pain, gentleness, and goodwill for others within them. This feeling protects them from oppression, deceit, and injustice, and they adopt justice and love in their behavior.
For example, if someone comes to us for advice, we should ask ourselves from the heart what kind of advice would I like for myself if I were in their place? Surely we want sincere, truthful, and beneficial advice for ourselves. Therefore, the requirement of the greatness of humanity is that we also give correct and benevolent advice to our brother. Giving wrong advice based on envy, self-interest, or carelessness is not only a moral weakness but also against the spirit of humanity.
When goodwill awakens in the heart, the language becomes soft, the attitude becomes polite, and the character becomes dignified. Such a person respects the rights of others, does not take advantage of anyone's weakness, and establishes an atmosphere of trust and love with their existence.
The greatness of humanity prevents a person from oppression and exploitation and teaches them truth, loyalty, and sacrifice. If the height of wealth or knowledge gives rise to arrogance, the human soul withers, but when the same height is accompanied by humility, it makes the character fragrant. Piety purifies the heart of a person and keeps them focused on self-accountability.
A very subtle aspect of human greatness is the delicacy of feeling - the state in which the sigh of a poor person shakes the heart and the tears of an orphan moisten the eyes. There is sweetness in the conversation of such individuals, loyalty in action, and love in attitude. These are the people who bring society out of the darkness of hatred and into the light of peace and love.
The greatness of humanity ignites a flame of service and compassion within a person. This flame keeps hope alive in difficulties and saves a person from despair. In moments of solitude, this feeling leads a person to self-reflection, patience, and new determination, and they ask themselves from the heart whether I really want for others what I want for myself.
Ultimately, the truth emerges that the real success of a human being lies in their morals, love, and service. A person adorned with the greatness of humanity not only makes their own life meaningful but also becomes a source of hope, peace, and light for others. Therefore, we should adorn our character with sincerity, compassion, humility, and goodwill so that our life becomes a practical message of humanity.
Verses
The word that comes from the heart has an effect
It does not have wings, but it has the power to fly
The world is fragrant with the fragrance of morality
A human is one who gives peace to hearts
May Allah Almighty grant us the wealth of the greatness of humanity, good morals, and true goodwill, and grant us a heart that likes for others what it likes for itself. Amen, O Lord of the Worlds. 🤲
