Title: What is it like to just sleep during fasting?
For the past few days, I have seen many people spending most of their time sleeping while fasting. This scene gave rise to a question in my heart, and this feeling prompted me to write about whether it is correct to spend the fast merely sleeping or not? Therefore, with this good intention, these submissions are presented.
🌹- All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds - 🌹
According to scholars, fasting is not just about hunger and thirst, but it is a great act of worship whose purpose is to reform the self and attain piety. As Allah Almighty says in the Qur'an that fasting has been made obligatory so that you may develop piety. So it is known that the real purpose of fasting is the awakening of the heart and the purity of the soul, not just physical exertion.
- Now the question is, what is the ruling if a person sleeps all day while fasting?
The jurists say that if the fasting person has made the intention and followed the conditions of fasting, then the fast does not become invalid merely by sleeping. However, it is worth considering that a person who spends the whole day in a sleep of negligence deprives himself of the light and blessings of this great worship.
The blessed example of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ is before us that in Ramadan, you ﷺ used to do a lot of worship, recitation of Qur'an, remembrance and service to humanity. Your ﷺ blessed life is proof that fasting does not lead a person to laziness and idleness, but to active work and closeness to Allah.
So the person who sleeps only so that time passes and there is no feeling of hunger and thirst, then this behavior is against the spirit of fasting. Such a person may fulfill the obligation, but may be deprived of the full reward. And the sleep that is due to weakness, illness or severe fatigue, there is no accountability for it in Sharia, because religion is the name of ease, not hardship.
The summary of the matter is that fasting is a trust, a spiritual journey, an opportunity for a person to be close to his Lord. It is not wise to waste it in mere sleep. The people of faith should adorn the moments of fasting with recitation, prayer, remembrance and good deeds so that they can obtain the true fruits of this great worship.
