Makkah Mukarrama: Axis of the World, Manifestation of Power, and Fortress of Tawhid (Oneness of God)
Study and Observation: Suleman Qureshi
On the earth, there are some regions that the Creator of the Universe has brought down not merely as geographical entities, but as spiritual realities. At the forefront of these, undoubtedly, is Umm al-Qura, Makkah Mukarrama. This unparalleled city is not just a collection of stones and mountains, but it is the focal point of the earthly universe where the course of human history was determined, where power imprinted its signs of glory and beauty, and from where the rays of pure monotheism burst forth, illuminating the world of humanity. This barren valley is, in fact, the most fertile piece of land for humanity's spiritual cultivation.
Earthly Centrality and Spiritual Attraction
The status of Makkah Mukarrama is not merely that of a city, but it is the beating heart of the Islamic world and the center of spiritual gravity. Just as planets in the solar system revolve around a defined center, so too do the hearts and minds of the human world continue to circumambulate this ancient House. It is the magnetic center that draws every believer towards it. If modern geographical research considers it the center of the earth's land, then this is merely a material proof of the spiritual reality that this place was naturally worthy of being made the Qibla (direction of prayer) for humanity. When millions of people living in the East and West bow their foreheads towards this one point five times a day, it is a practical declaration that the center of our loyalties and the axis of our obedience is only and only this one place appointed by the Lord of the Universe.
Astounding Signs of Perfect Power
Look at this valley of Makkah, where the apparent means of livelihood were absent, where the concept of life was impossible. The act of Sayyidna Ibrahim Khalilullah (peace be upon him) leaving his wife and infant son in this waterless and barren desert was, on the face of it, an incomprehensible enigma for the human mind, but in reality, it was "a great sign of power." Allah Almighty wanted to show that where His command and His pleasure are involved, springs of Zamzam burst forth from the chests of deserts.
The imprints of divine history are inscribed on its walls. The Sa'i (walking) between Safa and Marwa is a living memorial of a mother's yearning and then the descent of Allah's mercy. These places are shouting out that here the rule of material causes does not prevail, but rather the direct agency of the Causer of Causes. Despite the worst storms, accidents, and enemy invasions in history, the survival of this House on its original foundations is itself a great sign of Allah, which is proof that the protector of this House is not a human being, but the Lord of the Kaaba Himself.
A Practical and Living Manifestation of the Doctrine of Tawhid
The greatest and most fundamental identity of Makkah Mukarrama is the "doctrine of Tawhid" (Oneness of God). It is the place where Sayyidna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) shattered all the idols of polytheism and raised the banner of worship of the One God. The House of Allah is, in fact, the first and strongest fortress of Tawhid on earth.
The grand gathering of Hajj presents such a practical picture of this doctrine of Tawhid that it is impossible to find its parallel in the entire human history. When people from all over the world, of different colors, races, languages, and classes, abandoning all their worldly distinctions, dressed in the same attire (Ihram), madly raising the voices of "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk" (Here I am at Your service, O Allah, here I am), then this sight is a clear proof that there is no distinction between king and beggar, master and slave here. Here, all are only servants of one Lord.
The scene of Tawaf (circumambulation) reflects the natural movement of the universe. Just as every particle is revolving around its center, so too is man circumambulating his true center of servitude, that is, Allah, the One, without partner. This place teaches man that the purpose of his life is to come out of the slavery of other than Allah and come only into the servitude of one Allah. Coming here, man erases his ego and acknowledges the greatness of God.
Makkah Mukarrama is not just the name of a geographical region, but it is the name of a state, the name of an ideology, and the name of a movement. It is the center that connects lost humanity to its original Creator and Owner. It is the sign of power that is lighting the lamp of spirituality in a materialistic world. And above all, it is the eternal center of Tawhid that will continue to call out to humans until the Day of Judgment that your salvation, your prosperity, and your peace are only and only in bowing down—before that Lord—who is the Lord of this House.
