If we study human history, the fact emerges that man has always been caught in a struggle between darkness and light. These darknesses are sometimes of ignorance, sometimes of oppression, sometimes of despair, and sometimes of moral decline. While light is a symbol of knowledge, guidance, justice, hope, and moral awakening. In fact, the journey from darkness to light is the real purpose of human life and the basic driving force of civilizational evolution.
Darkness does not only mean material darkness but also intellectual, spiritual, and moral darkness. When man is deprived of knowledge, the darkness of ignorance overshadows his thinking. He loses the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, begins to consider superstitions as reality, and becomes a victim of prejudice and narrow-mindedness. This ignorance leads societies towards backwardness, chaos, and decline. History is witness to the fact that the nations that ignored knowledge, sooner or later, were lost in darkness.
Similarly, oppression and injustice are also a deep form of darkness. When the powerful start suppressing the weak, when the right is trampled upon and falsehood is protected, the whole society is plunged into darkness. In such an environment, neither peace remains, nor trust, nor human dignity.
The way out of these darknesses passes through the reformation of the individual, because the fate of nations is not decided collectively but by the character of individuals. Allama Iqbal has expressed this reality in a very eloquent manner:
The fate of nations is in the hands of individuals
Every individual is a star of the nation's destiny
This verse guides us to the fact that if the individual improves, the nation automatically starts moving from darkness to light.
The very first ray of light is knowledge. Knowledge gives man awareness, gives him the ability to think, and frees him from blind imitation. An educated person not only improves himself but also becomes a source of positive change in his society. That is why Islam has made knowledge obligatory, arranging to bring man out of intellectual darkness.
Guidance is also a great source of light. When man connects with his Lord, the purpose of his life becomes clear. Worship creates discipline, restraint, and moral purity within man, which takes him out of spiritual darkness and leads him towards peace and light.
Moral values such as truth, honesty, justice, and service to humanity are the lamps that keep societies illuminated. When these values weaken, corruption and insensitivity are born, and society plunges back into darkness. In contrast, strong moral foundations give nations prosperity.
In the end, it can be said that the journey from darkness to light is not an imaginary concept but a practical reality, provided that the individual understands his responsibility. When every individual considers himself a star of the nation's destiny, even the darkest night can turn into dawn, because light is always associated with consciousness, character, and guidance.
