"Knowledge and Civilization — The Real Power of Life for Humanity"

_________________

The biggest distinction between humans and animals in the world is knowledge. Knowledge is the light that erases the darkness of hearts, polishes the intellect, and elevates man to the heights of greatness. The nation that possesses the wealth of knowledge and the light of civilization remains alive and radiant. And the nation that turns away from knowledge is lost in the darkness of decline and slavery.

Come! Now let us ignite the light of action, not like fire from words — a light that illuminates hearts, awakens minds, and strengthens characters. We must stand in the light of knowledge, not in the shadow of the sword; we must achieve greatness in steadfastness and self-respect, not in aggression. When our generations are adorned with the curriculum of knowledge, deliver justice to every home, and pave the way for dignity and respect for everyone — then these pretexts for enmity will automatically end, and the remaining traces of slavery will be erased;

Let us become a nation that is free from fear, but also a guardian of gentleness and humanity; one that does not fear death but knows the art of living life with dignity. This is the power that changes the world — not through the thirst for blood, but through truth, knowledge, courage, and morality. Therefore, the Holy Quran first commanded man to "read".

Allah Almighty said:

> اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

“Read in the name of your Lord who created” (Al-Alaq)

This first divine command is proof that the foundation of Islam is based on knowledge. Allah Almighty made man the noblest of creation through knowledge.

Allah says:

> يَرْفَعِ اللّٰهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ

“Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees.” (Al-Mujadila: 11)

This elevation is not just worldly honor, but a symbol of spiritual elevation and civilizational greatness.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:

> طلب العلم فريضة على كل مسلم

“Seeking knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim man and woman.” (Ibn Majah)

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

> العلم نور يهدي به الله من يشاء

“Knowledge is a light by which Allah guides whom He wills.”

That is, knowledge is the lamp that not only illuminates the mind but also refines character and civilization.

The relationship between knowledge and civilization is this:

If knowledge is light, then civilization is the reflection of that light. Knowledge gives man intellect, but civilization gives beauty to that intellect.

Without knowledge, man can be misguided, and without civilization, knowledge becomes a sharp weapon that wounds humanity.

When knowledge is connected with ethics, gentleness, and justice, civilization is born.

Islamic civilization is the name of this combination — knowledge of the Quran, thought of justice, character of prophethood, and service to humanity.

The Golden Age of Islamic Civilization

When Muslims made knowledge their motto, the world was at their feet.

Cordoba, Baghdad, Samarkand, Granada, and Delhi became minarets of knowledge and art.

Muslim scientists, philosophers, Muhaddithin and Mufassirin laid the foundations on which the entire scientific structure of today's world is based.

Ibn Sina, Khwarizmi, Ibn Rushd, Jabir bin Hayyan, Al-Biruni — these are all living examples of the knowledge and civilization that was illuminated by the light of faith.

Deprivation of Knowledge is the Root of Decline

When the Ummah abandoned knowledge and fell into blind imitation, decline began.

The Quran warned:

> قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

“Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” (Az-Zumar: 9)

Ignorance enslaves man, while knowledge frees him.

That is why Imam Ghazali said:

> “Knowledge is the power by which the heat of life is created in dead nations.”

Knowledge: The Source of Life's Power

In the heart where there is the light of knowledge, the freshness of life remains.

Knowledge acquaints man with the purpose of his existence, and civilization establishes him on the path of humanity.

The firmness of faith is not possible without knowledge, and the beauty of knowledge does not remain without civilization.

Both of these together become the power of life — the power that protects man from ignorance, prejudice, and tribulations, and leads the Ummah on the path of honor and dignity.

Today, there is a need for us to rekindle the lamps of knowledge, and make our homes, madrassas, and institutions centers of knowledge and civilization.

Give our new generation not only bookish knowledge but also moral training, so that they become spreaders of light, not increasers of darkness.

O Allah! Grant us beneficial knowledge, take us out of the darkness of ignorance,

Illuminate our generations with the light of knowledge, faith, and civilization,

And include us among those nations who spread light in the world with the light of knowledge,

And attain the happiness of Your nearness in the Hereafter.

Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds.
