Article Title:
What is the cause of depression? Why are so many people becoming victims of depression?
The modern era is seemingly an era of progress, convenience, and technology, but at the same time, it has also become an era of anxiety, loneliness, and mental stress. Depression is rapidly becoming a psychological problem worldwide, affecting children, youth, women, men, and the elderly alike. The question is, what is the cause of depression? Why are so many people becoming victims of depression?
The reasons for this are:
Neglect of Allah and distance from the remembrance of Allah:
When the heart does not find peace by connecting with its Lord, a void is created within.
It is stated in the Quran:
"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."
When the spiritual connection weakens, anxiety increases.
Worldliness, greed, and excessive desires:
Earning more than necessary, competition, and greed
Never allow a person to be satisfied—as a result, the burden on the heart increases.
The end of contentment and ingratitude:
Not seeing Allah's blessings, always complaining
Creates a sense of deprivation within a person, which gives rise to sadness.
Being immersed in sins and the restlessness of conscience:
According to Islam, sins put a burden on the heart.
When a person goes astray, spiritual restlessness increases—repentance lightens the heart.
Lack of trust and wanting to control everything:
When a person wants to control every matter themselves
And does not trust in destiny, mental stress increases.
Loneliness and weakening of social relationships:
Previously, people were connected in families, with friends, and in the neighborhood environment, but now mobile phones, social media, and busyness have made people lonely from within.
Competition and pressure to succeed:
Today, everyone is involved in the race for success. Education, jobs, economic status, social standing—competition has increased so much everywhere that the fear of failure breaks a person from within.
Negative impact of social media:
Seeing the prosperous lives of others on social media, people start to consider their own lives inferior.
Comparison, envy, a sense of deprivation, and the pressure of artificial life increase depression.
.Economic problems and unemployment:
Problems such as poverty, debt, inflation, and unemployment also severely affect mental health.
Bitter childhood experiences:
Abuse, scolding, neglect, or physical and emotional violence in childhood often become the foundation for lifelong mental problems.
Envy, malice, and constant comparison with others:
Islam calls envy a "disease of the heart."
Being jealous of the success of others weakens the heart.
Social injustice, oppression, and loneliness:
According to Islamic teachings,
Broken relationships, cruelty, helplessness, and injustice also break a person.
Solution:
Habit of patience and gratitude
Remembrance, prayer, salat, recitation
Repentance and self-correction
Charity and benevolence
Simple living and contentment
Good company and positive relationships
All these make the heart strong and peaceful.
Islam says: Grief is natural—but man is not left alone.
Relationship with Allah, positive effort, and appropriate treatment—this is the balanced path.
Depression is not a weakness, but a real disease that needs to be understood and resolved.
If we acknowledge sincerity, compassion, the strength of social relationships, and the importance of mental health, depression can be reduced in society.
