Ethics: The Foundation of a Civilized Society
Ethics are the very soul of any society. If ethics are strong, the society progresses, and if ethics weaken, the nation declines despite wealth and power. Ethics refer to the values that teach a person to differentiate between good and evil.
A civilized person is recognized by their ethics, not by their clothes or wealth. Truthfulness, honesty, patience, tolerance, compassion, and respect for humanity are the qualities that truly make a person great. Unfortunately, in today's era, material progress has increased significantly, but ethical values are rapidly weakening.
Islam has placed special emphasis on ethics. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was called "Rahmat-ul-lil-Alameen" (a mercy to all the worlds), and his life was the epitome of ethics. He (peace be upon him) said:
"I have been sent to perfect the best of manners."
This hadith clarifies that ethics are the foundation of religion.
Ethics begin at home. What children learn from their parents is what they manifest in society later on. If parents teach truthfulness and good behavior, children become responsible citizens. Schools and teachers also play an important role in character building.
In today's society, selfishness, lying, and dishonesty are becoming common. People sacrifice principles for temporary gain. This behavior may give temporary benefit to the individual, but it weakens the society. A society where trust disappears, the wheel of progress stops.
Ethics teach us to be mindful of the feelings of others. A civilized society is one where the weak are helped, elders are respected, and youngsters are treated with love. If we only do this much in our daily lives, that we do not cause pain to anyone, even then a big positive change can come in the society.
In short, progress without ethics is meaningless. We should refine our character, teach good manners to children, and practically adopt goodness. This is the path that leads us to a peaceful and prosperous society.
