"Is Takfir (Excommunication) the Only Service to Religion? (A Question to the Barelvi Scholars)"
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. Article (76)
(A Call to Unite, Not Divide, the Ummah)
Allah Almighty has honored this Ummah with the greatest blessing: faith, brotherhood, and unity. But alas! Today, we are destroying this very blessing with our own hands. In the name of sects, factions, and groups, such a gulf has been created that brother looks at brother with suspicion, faith is questioned before giving greetings, and the certificate of faith has been handed over to a few individuals.
The Quran clearly declares to us:
وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.
(Aal-Imran: 103)
And in another place, it is commanded:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ كَافَّةً وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ
O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
(Surat Al-Baqarah: 208)
But the practical situation is that we have abandoned the rope of Allah and grasped the ropes of our respective sects, and each one is pulling the other—resulting in the entire Ummah being torn apart from the middle.
This writing is not to belittle any particular sect, but rather a heartfelt question, especially to the Barelvi scholars—because, practically, the most fatwas (religious edicts) of Takfir (declaring someone an infidel) are heard from their circles.
The question is:
If Deobandis, Ahl-e-Hadith, Jamaat-e-Islami are really infidels in your view,
Then:
Why do you perform marriages with them?
Why do you give your daughters to them?
Why do you eat, drink, sit, and associate with them?
Why do you not allow them in mosques where your authority doesn't prevail, and where it does, why don't you let them in?
Have you forgotten the command of the Quran, or have you donned the cloak of Taqiyya (dissimulation) and undue expediency like the Shias?
The Quran makes a clear and unequivocal declaration:
وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْكَافِرِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دُونِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚ أَتُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ سُلْطَانًا مُّبِينًا
Do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you want to give Allah a clear case against yourselves?
(Surat An-Nisa: 144)
And a clear command in the chapter of marriage:
وَلَا تُنكِحُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَتَّىٰ يُؤْمِنُوا
And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe.
(Surat Al-Baqarah: 221)
That is, according to the Quran, if someone is truly an infidel, then: neither is marriage with him permissible,
Nor close relations with him,
Nor friendship,
Nor association.
So then, why this double standard?
Infidel in words,
And brother in deeds?
This behavior is clear evidence that the issue is not the Quran,
But rather sectarian expediency and a weak and flawed strategy to control the masses.
And also, it is a unanimous principle of jurisprudence:
Marriage with an infidel is void, forbidden, and considered as adultery.
So then, what kind of Sharia (Islamic law) is this that you call someone an infidel in words,
And connect relations in deeds?
If they are really infidels, then this marriage is forbidden.
And if marriage is permissible, then calling them infidels is deception, sedition, and slander.
Danger in the Light of Hadith
The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
: " إِذَا كَفَّرَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ، فَقَدْ بَاءَ بِهَا أَحَدُهُمَا ".
If a man calls his brother an infidel, then one of the two certainly becomes an infidel.
(Muslim, including numbering. 215)
That is, Takfir is not a game,
It is not a slip of the tongue, but a gamble on faith.
And another Hadith:
If a man says, "The people are ruined," then he is the most ruined of them.
(Sahih Muslim, including numbering - 6683)
Reality: Hypocrisy or Expediency?
Seeing all this, a question arises in the hearts of the common people:
Are these fatwas really for the sake of religion?
Or a weapon to maintain sectarian dominance?
Is this Takfir the protection of belief or the politics of the pulpit?
Because if the other were really infidels, then
There would be complete severance from them like with the Shias,
No relations, no marriage, no greetings, no connection.
But here the matter is the opposite:
A fatwa of infidelity,
And association like with Muslims!
This behavior is clear evidence that:
This Takfir is not scholarly, but psychological.
It is not belief, but a disease of power.
From this, it becomes completely clear that those whom you call infidels, in reality, you can neither cut them off from society nor separate from them religiously. This is beyond your control, because the groups you declare as infidels are based on the fundamental principles of Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jamaat: the same Kalima (declaration of faith), the same Quran, the same Prophet ﷺ, the same Qibla (direction of prayer), the same prayer.
And the amazing thing is that on one hand, you declare yourselves the sole representatives of Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jamaat and make a fuss, and on the other hand, you push everyone else out of the circle of Islam, even though, in practice, you can neither abandon them as non-Muslims, nor is the Ummah ready to abandon them. This attitude is actually a declaration that this Takfir is not a religious reality but a sectarian psychology, the purpose of which is not reform but a sense of superiority. Refrain completely from fueling such things, in it lies the secret of many of our expediencies, because today the Ummah is already:
Politically weak,
Economically enslaved,
Educationally backward,
Morally broken.
On top of that, if the scholars themselves
Shoot arrows of disbelief, innovation, and misguidance at each other,
Then where will the youth go?
Whom will they trust?
Which Islam will they believe to be true?
The Quran warns us:
وَلَا تَنَازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ
And do not dispute and [then] you will fail and your power will depart.
(Al-Anfal: 46)
And today, our power has really departed.
O honorable leaders of the nation!
O guardians of the pulpit and the niche!
For God's sake, stop playing with this fire.
This fire will not only burn others,
It will turn the whole house to ashes.
Fatwas of Takfir do not save religion,
They bury the Ummah.
Remember:
Islam is not the name of any sect,
Islam is not the fiefdom of any madrasa (religious school),
Islam is not the trademark of any group.
Islam is that which:
Considers the one who recites the Kalima to be a Muslim,
Unless he himself declares disbelief through words or clear outward actions.
In the end, we must remember that great advice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe. (Sahih Bukhari. 10)
Think!
Who is safe from our tongue today?
And with what face will we say on the Day of Judgment:
O Allah! We came to unite the Ummah…
When the reality is that we broke it the most.
Break this toy!
It is swallowing the Ummah.
It is not religion, it is Fitna (sedition).
And Fitna is a greater crime than killing.
Forgive me, this writing of mine is not an invitation to any extremism or fanaticism, but rather an invitation to unite seriously on the basis of faith and Islam. Also, the institution's agreement with this writing is not necessary.
