26 January is an important day in the history of India, when the country implemented its constitution and declared justice, equality, and the rule of law. Islam also teaches a person to be a responsible, ethical, and just citizen. That is why, if Republic Day is viewed in the light of the Quran and Hadith, many of its ethical aspects come to the fore.

The Importance of Justice and Fairness

Justice is considered a fundamental value in Islam. It is stated in the Holy Quran:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ بِالْقِسْطِ شُهَدَاءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِكُمْ

(Al-Nisa: 135)

Translation:

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves.

The Constitution of India also considers everyone equal in the eyes of the law. This principle is in harmony with Islamic teachings that no one should be treated unfairly on the basis of religion, race, or language.

Trust and Responsibility

In Islam, every responsibility is called a trust. The Quran says:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا

(Al-Nisa: 58)

Translation:

Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due.

As a citizen, adhering to the constitution, respecting laws, and fulfilling national responsibilities is also a form of trust.

Freedom and Limits

Islam does not make freedom unrestrained but conditional with moral limits. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ

(Sahih Bukhari: 2554)

Translation:

Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock.

Republic Day teaches us the same lesson that accountability is necessary with freedom.

Peace, Tolerance, and Human Respect

Islam is a religion of peace. It is said in the Quran:

وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

(Al-Baqarah: 190)

Translation:

And do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.

Maintaining peace, brotherhood, and mutual respect in the country is a religious and moral responsibility of a Muslim, especially in a multi-religious society.

Goodwill for the Homeland

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed for Madinah, which is evidence of love and goodwill for the homeland. This shows that playing a positive role for the welfare of the country is not against Islamic teachings but is in accordance with them.

Republic Day reminds us that we should not only demand our rights but also recognize our duties. If we make the values taught by the Quran and Hadith—justice, honesty, trust, patience, and tolerance—a part of our practical life, then we can not only be good Muslims but also responsible and well-charactered Indian citizens.
