You will surely be tested in your possessions and in your lives. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you persevere and fear Allah - then that is of the matters requiring resolve. (Surah Al Imran, Verse 186)
Translation: You will surely be tested in your wealth and lives, and you will hear many painful things from those who were given the Book (Jews and Christians) and from the polytheists. And if you are patient and adopt piety, then this will be a matter of courage and determination.
Two things are noteworthy in this noble verse: one is that the world is a place of examination and trial. Here, everyone will be tested in their life and wealth, and no one is exempt from it.
The second thing is that the people of falsehood (Jews and Christians) and the polytheists will taunt and revile Islam and its followers, and they will hear harsh words. Since there is a strong possibility that emotions will be hurt and inflamed by this trial and harsh words, Allah Almighty has commanded the believers to put patience, piety, and abstinence into practice.
In the commentary of this verse, a story is mentioned in Bukhari Sharif that after the migration, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once rode to meet Hazrat Saad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) of the Khazraj tribe. On the way, he passed by a gathering in which Abdullah Ibn Abi (the chief of the hypocrites), polytheists, some Jews, and some Muslims were present. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) invited the people of the gathering to Islam and advised them with the verses of the Holy Quran. Abdullah Ibn Abi expressed strong displeasure and began to speak harshly to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), covering his mouth with a cloth and saying to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "Do not spread dust and dirt here. We do not like your words. Go and tell all these things to your own people."
This discussion was going on when a companion of the Prophet, Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him), said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), you must come to our gatherings. We will listen to your words very carefully." A debate started between the enemies of Islam and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), to the point where they almost came to blows. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) resolved the matter and went to Hazrat Saad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), the chief of Medina, and informed him of the whole matter, that Abdullah Ibn Abi had behaved disrespectfully. Upon this, Hazrat Saad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) consoled the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said that before your arrival in Medina, Abdullah Ibn Abi was about to be appointed the chief of Medina, and now that I have been chosen, he is very upset. That is why that insolent person is venting his anger on you. Please ignore his words!
This incident shows that Islam and its followers have been targeted for taunts and revilement, and every possible effort has been made to defame them. Therefore, in such turbulent and unspeakable circumstances, the cure is mentioned in the Quranic verses, especially the above-mentioned verse: "And if you are patient and fear Allah - then that is of the matters requiring resolve." That is, in such critical situations, believers should hold fast to patience, piety, and abstinence because it is one of the acts of courage and determination.
